No Kings in America

On January 20, 2025, Donald Trump began his first day in office as a dictator, as he had promised, and he has remained a dictator ever since.

The Trump government, in less than a year, has transformed our country into a fledgling authoritarian regime, altering the fundamental principles of our democracy.

Some examples of this brutal dictatorship include:
●   Deportation raids with armed, masked men attacking and detaining people, including children, often based on racial profiling.
●   Innocent people treated like criminals and forcibly removed from homes and vehicles, leading to injuries and even death.
●   Detention centers are overcrowded with children and families, with inmates often ‘lost” in the system. Plans for more facilities are being developed.
●   Daily violation of our constitutional rights to due process and protections against unreasonable searches and seizures.
●   Suppression of free speech, press, and assembly.
●   Erosion of our right to vote and to fair elections continues to be eroded, in violation of the Constitution.
●   Hundreds of thousands of jobs lost in both the government and private sectors.
Let’s Turn Our Anger and Frustration into Action!

The 3.5% Rule of Nonviolent Protesting

In her book “Why Civil Resistance Works”, Harvard professor Erica Chenoweth wrote about the 3.5% rule.  In short, the 3.5% rule says:

No government has withstood a challenge from a nonviolent, active participation of 3.5% of its population. Based on data from 1900 to 2006, these campaigns were twice as likely to succeed as violent ones.

For a country like the United States, 3.5% represents roughly 12 million people.

The 3.5% refers to the maximum number of people participating at any single point in time, not the total number over the entire campaign.

While 3.5% is a small minority, such a level of active participation probably means many more people quietly agree with the cause.

Nonviolent campaigns are more successful because they attract a broader, more diverse, and more inclusive base of participants compared to violent campaigns.

It is a “rule of thumb” or observation, not a guarantee, that sustained, active, nonviolent participation of 3.5% of the population leads to success.

Most nonviolent campaigns actually succeed with far less than 3.5% participation.
