Card 26: Protect the Affordable Care Act

A Critical Crisis Looms. Let’s Stop It Now.

Protect the Affordable Care Act Subsidies:
A Call to Action for All Americans

Today our country faces a major healthcare emergency. Increasing insurance premiums, rising costs from providers and hospitals, higher deductibles, and exorbitant drug prices weigh heavily on millions of Americans, likely including you.

The Affordable Care Act began in 2014. Subsidies to lower premiums were put in place by the American Rescue Plan and extended by the Inflation Reduction Act. On December 31 these subsidies will expire. If they are not extended, millions will lose coverage because of dramatically higher premiums.

The fact is, regardless of your situation, whether you’re rich or poor, employed or searching for work, millions of Americans without healthcare access will affect you and all Americans.

Are you or is someone you know an American
who might lose the subsidy for their ACA insurance plan?

The ACA subsidies expire on December 31, 2025, creating a ripple effect:

  • Approximately 5 million people will no longer qualify for ACA plans.
  • Premium hikes average 114% for another 17 million people. Many will be forced to drop coverage, including people with chronic or critical conditions.
  • As healthy people give up ACA coverage, those who remain will be sicker and more expensive to insure, leading to additional rounds of premium hikes and people dropping coverage.

Hospitals are required to provide emergency care to uninsured people; these costs are passed on to insured patients, further raising premiums. Unreimbursed care is already forcing rural hospitals to close.

Urgent Call To Action

In the second week of December, Congress will decide whether to save the ACA subsidies. Contact your Senators and Representatives by phone, email, or letter, and urge them to vote ‘YES’ to extend the ACA subsidies.

Find your Senators and Representatives through www.senate.gov and www.house.gov, or call the Capitol switchboard at 202-224-3121.
