What’s at Stake for You in Election 2024?
The Harris-Walz Platform
After examining Project 2025, a look at the Harris-Walz proposals:
- Permanently restore the Child Tax Credit, which helped more than 100 million working- and middle-class Americans and cut child poverty by half while it was in effect.
- Rebalance the tax code to ensure that all Americans pay their fair share. This includes raising taxes on incomes of more than $400,000 annually, including a billionaire minimum tax, taxing long-term capital gains for people earning more than $1 million a year, and stock buybacks.
- Protect Social Security and Medicare by having high earners pay their fair share, and empower Medicare to negotiate lower prices for more prescription medications.
- Ensure all women have access to reproductive care with federal legislation to override the bans currently in place in 18 states.
- Pass the John Lewis Voting Rights and the Freedom to Vote Acts, guaranteeing voting access and protections to all citizens.
- Promote immigration reform. Harris-Walz will advance the Bipartisan Border Bill, adding 1,500 border security agents and more technology to intercept fentanyl and other drugs.
- Make housing and groceries more affordable. Harris-Walz will work with developers to build 3 million affordable housing units in the next four years and with Congress to outlaw corporate landlords’ price fixing. They plan to provide first-time homebuyers with up to $25,000 toward down payments. They will also work for a federal ban on price gouging on food and other necessities, building on laws in 37 states.
- Work with Congress to implement Supreme Court reforms, including term limits and an enforceable code of ethics.
- Support small businesses. Harris-Walz plans to continue the tremendous growth of small businesses under the Biden-Harris administration by expanding tax deductions to $50,000 for business start-ups and increasing the share of federal contracts for small businesses.
- Defend the right of all workers to organize, bargain, and form unions. Raise the minimum wage, eliminate taxes on tips for service and hospitality workers, and establish paid family and medical leave.
- Continue to build a clean-energy economy. Ensure all Americans have clean air and water while working to meet international climate goals and ensure US energy security and independence with record energy production that will lower household energy costs.
- Promote gun safety. Harris and Walz — both gun owners — believe a safe America means gun safety legislation, including universal background checks, red flag laws, a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, and investing in state and local law enforcement and community safety programs.
- Support military service members and veterans with programs to promote mental health and prevent suicide, lower homelessness, and expand economic opportunities for military families.
- Advance US security at home and abroad with a strong military, international alliances, and cooperation on overseas conflicts (including supporting countries’ right to defend themselves against aggression), human rights, health concerns, and the global economy.
